 Never Give Up!

On Friday, August 22 I had two soccer games.  I don’t remember much about the morning game but I definitely remember the game in the afternoon.  Our team, the Pumas, was playing at a field in Canby.  This game started out like most of our other games and the lead was going back and forth.  With about 1 minute left in the game, Canby scored a goal to tie the score at 3 to 3.  Usually, I play the forward position but Coach Jose had just started having me play the sweeper position.  We pretty much figured the game would end in a tie but Coach Jose keeps telling us to never give up.  With 10 seconds left in the game, Canby’s goalie booted the ball to midfield where I trapped the ball.  From the half line I kicked the ball using the shovel kick with all my strength and the ball flew….  I remember seeing the ball fly over the goalies head, bounce once and roll into the goal.  I scored the winning goal.  Everyone was cheering.  I have never seen Coach Jose so happy.  He said “I knew the moment I heard the sound when you kicked the ball it was going to make it!”  It was an amazing day as our team won the game 4 to 3.

 Things I learned on Midfield

I have played soccer since I was 4 years old in Newberg but coming up to Classic level was a big jump and challenging.  I had to learn a whole new kind of soccer, improve my skills, learn a new position and master new rules.  I was joining a team that had played indoor soccer together.  I was the new girl.  At first it was frustrating. Sometimes I felt I would never be good enough to be accepted by my new team.  But I discovered some things this summer.

I can do it!  It took lots and lots of extra practice at home.  You might see me kicking the ball at the school yard on days I don't have practice.  I wasn’t great at first and I was upset sometimes but I get better every week.

Make Personal Goals!  My parents said I shouldn’t measure myself against other players. So now I make personal goals.  Each practice and each game I make goals for myself.  Each week my goals get bigger.

My teammates will believe in me IF I believe if myself!  I work hard, I keep improving and I cheer on my team mates.  That makes me a Puma.

It’s still fun!  After all the hard work and worries about not being good enough I still love playing this game and I like the people I play with.

I may never be a star player of the NSC Puma’s.  I don’t have to be.  I am better today than when I joined in June and get better every day.  I like my team mates and I enjoy being on that field.  Not sure you’re good enough?  I bet you are.  I am glad I tried out for NSC. Come watch us play.  I might not score the next goal but my team will for sure and that's worth seeing.
